Here are a pair of videos shot by a Channel 2 cameraman following a "rescue" of a weather balloon that "crashed" on Baldy, not far from my home on August 14.
Someone saw the long silver thing and mistook it for a crashed glider. We opted to bring the thing down anyway to avoid more 911 phone calls reporting it.
I was just happy to have a chance to ride the excellent trails that are usually closed to motor vehicles. I enjoy them on my mountain bike, but the motorcycle is even more fun.
First, here's a photo of of the blimp following me through the trees where CJ met up with me on his bike:
Here's a clip of CJ and I riding down with one end wrapped around my wrist (it's a reenactment, so we've already let most of the helium out):
And here's a random moment that made the 6:00 and 10:00 news and was discussed on the morning show the next day. As we deflated the balloon to transport it to its owner (who never paid us the reward as advertized on the balloon itself 🙁 ), someone asked whether we thought it contained helium or hydrogen....
Everyone seems to find it very funny. CJ had to put down his kickstand and step off his bike because he said he was about to fall over from laughing so hard. He Tevo'ed the actual news report (which is even better) and has watched it at least 80 times, at last report, reportedly laughing harder each time. He says it's the best Search and Rescue news coverage in his 12 years on the team. (But don't get your hopes up, I don't think it's that funny - though I do enjoy listening to all the laughing at the end.)
