involves driving three miles up stunning American Fork Canyon, then hiking a mile and a half and over 1,000 feet to the "office."
<-- climbing carefully below The Great Heart of Timpanogos to retrieve some fallen sunglasses with the snake stick.
The office consists of the tiny "employees only" room and our private lunch bench outside with dazzling canyon views; plus Hansen, Middle and Timpanogos Caves, where I'll be leading tours until the cave closes for the season in October.
That's right, I work inside Mount Timpanogos! I'm now officially a National Park Ranger - hat, badge and all. I expect to enjoy it immensely.
Success! -->
Hi Shaun~
What has been a favorite moment on the job so far? Feel free to update your pictures. We can’t wait to see you in your new uniform. 🙂
Hi Melanee.
The caves are beautiful and full of surprising formations, plus little extras that most visitors never see like the gnat embedded in calcite that only appears when shining a flashlight through a stone curtain.
On slow days, it’s nice to chill on the lunch bench and just stare at the jagged cliffs across the canyon, up at the late-summer cool-blue sky, and watch the paragliders flying there some weekends.
But my favorite thing so far is the visitors. Every once in a while there will be one of those kids (or, less often, an adult) with the bright, wide-open eyes, taking everything in, and whatever else it is that makes them so refreshing to be around. Then it’s even more fun to show them the unique things in the cave and make them think and laugh.
I’ll take some photos on Wednesday and post something here.
