Jason, you should also look into Too Many Aptitudes in case that provides another giant clue for your self discovery. < -- that's the original article that kicked the whole thing off. Also google that phrase for many more resources on the subject. As for finding groups of self actualizers...I'd recommend starting with your interests and checking out local clubs (as in student or service organizations, not night clubs) and companies. It's hit and miss, but if there are a few self actualizers in charge, they'll create the sort of culture you want. I used to do that in my classes when I taught college, and also found it in several student clubs/student government organizations I was involved in. In other words: keep your eyes open for go-getters doing something above the norm. Oh, yeah, the internet is another good place to look. Start with your interests and see if someone great will let you team up with them, or start your own movement! For example, I've been working on love.UofLIFE.com for the last little while, and I hope to turn it into something that draws many people together soon!!

I’ve been looking for “what” it is about me that quantifies my peculiar personality and perspective. There is no doubt, this is exactly “what” it is… Those of you who have also reached this place will understand exactly what I mean when I say, it’s a very lonely and frustrating world. Every piece throughout this paper accurately describes that which I’ve been unable to effectively communicate to others. I have almost the complete opposite reaction to any situation than that of a “normal” person. When I do not react in a socially appropriate manner, it’s interpreted as arrogant or cold or… well I’m sure there are more adjectives employed, but (even to my surprise), despite every single person I know showing disapproval and even sometimes disappointment, they have absolutely no effect whatsoever on my ego or self-esteem. First thing that comes to mind at that point, am I a sociopath? But my deep level of empathy and love for first myself, but for everyone everywhere, quickly sooths any objective questions of being unbalanced. In fact, perhaps the topic that currently holds my biggest passion, is the life robbing inhibitions that our society places on our people. I just want to shake them and say, “yes you can”, “you can do that”… “just because you were raised poor and white trash, does not predetermine your abilities”. I seemingly care more about other people’s potential more than they do themselves. Anyway, I’m looking for a place where like-minded people meet, a “tribe” as per Seth Godin. If someone sees this comment and thinks they might know of such a place, please send me an email. If not, and you’re someone like me who stumbled upon this page… email me anyway. You never know what could come from such a chance encounter.

Thanks for dropping by and commenting, Betty! And of course I’m happy to hear you’ve enjoyed my books. I will check out that website (and look for your award winning shots).

I’m starting a new job where I’ll be shooting quite a bit of video, so I’ll watch for more photo opportunities along the way and post some here. In fact, there’s one I’ve been meaning to take and write a poem to accompany it, so I think I’ll stop thinking about it and go shoot it right now 🙂

p.s. Sorry you’re missing the snow – it’s just beginning to warm up around here and I’m thinking winter lasts a little bit too long, though the snow on the mountains above my home makes me feel like I live in a postcard 🙂

Hello Shaun, I have just discovered your books and am blown away by them! I feel we are so on the same page in many respects. I really respect your writing skills and evocative poetry as writing well is a great aim of mine. I share your philosophy on life and I revel in the magical bright feeling of Christmas too, which I look forward to every year. But most of all I love the beauty and serene peace of heavy winter snow. In fact most of the pictures in my house are of snow scenes to remind me of my youth in England – no snow where I live now unfortunately in rural Australia near the beach!

Photography is a major obsession of mine and I see you are getting into photography yourself . You might be interested to google ‘dpreview challenges’ a website I have found very interesting and instructive. I have won a few good places in some of their international challenges, voted on by their hundreds of members throughout the world.

I look forward to more books by you. I have already bought all of your past books!

Just was stocking friends on facebook and landed on your website…and then, in turn, on your blog. I thought this post was a terrific solution to the issue you brought up. What a great way to problem solve….not going into a huge power contest of blaming and critisizing, but rather actually brainstorming a solution. Pretty impressive…and somewhat rare. Thanks for standing up for all views involved… those of the dog lovers, the quiet lovers, and the canines themselves…..and of couse all the folks that are combinations of these groups (which would be where I find myself.) I don’t live in your neighborhood, but I can definitiely relate.
